Background

The number of people unemployed in the UK has grown to be over 2.49 million and the projection for this year shows that it will peak at 2.8 million. Young people (16-25 years) are the most affected. Graduates and those with fewer qualifications are finding it very hard to get jobs. 2009 was packed with high redundancies and company closures. Young people have to now compete with many seasoned workers for fewer job places.

A Prince’s Trust survey, conducted by YouGov Youth Index, warns that young victims of the recession will find it hard to secure jobs and attain future happiness. The psychological effect such as low self-esteem and confidence are plaguing the minds of youths not in employment, training or education.

The Youth Index reveals that those out of work are significantly less happy with their health, friendships and family life than those in work. Nearly one in 10 young people claim that unemployment drove them to drugs or alcohol. The survey, based on interviews with 2,088 16 to 25-year-olds, found that unemployed young people are also more likely to feel ashamed, rejected and unloved more of the time.
